Reflection #1
Some of the learning moments
for me were knowing how slow and how much time it would take to read a book with
my students. I have 3 different students and each of them is bilingual. Spanish
being their first language, is hard for me to be patient because I do not know
how hard it is to learn another language or have a hard time with words that are
used every day. I am not so much disappointed but I thought I would be learning
more for myself and not teaching someone else. It makes me feel good as a person
because two of my students love coming to see me and like learning new words and
like this program.
Right now we are just learning what we have read and some vocabulary words. My students and
I read the book, The Busy Body Book. This book was about how to stay active and what the
different part of your body does and what they need to survive. Some of the
vocabulary words were Blood vessels, tendons, intestines, and muscles. My
students had a hard time pronouncing words and were very shy about reading, so
we read together and talked about the pages before we moved on.
Reflection #2
I have 3 students that I am tutoring; Kayla, Victor, and Jose.
These students are having a little trouble reading because English is there
second language. Kayla is always excited to work with me and is very positive
about the word I give her. She struggles somewhat, but she gets through it
without my help. I suggested to her to started reading out loud more often so
she could better understand what she has read and more confident in what she is
reading. Victor is my problem student; he never really wants to do anything
because he speaks Spanish fluently.
When I ask him to read out loud or even just talk to me about what we
have read, he gives me one word answers and has a hard time talking to me. I
suggested to him that he needs to start reading out loud and trying learning 3
to 5 new words a week. Jose is a fun student. He is always excited to learn and
always wants to talk to me about movies and stuff he has done throughout his
week. When we start reading he has a hard time sounding out the words and
comprehending what we have read. I told him maybe reading out loud to his little
brother, would help him get more comfortable with reading out loud and maybe he
would better understand things he has read. I will continue working with them on
the struggles they are having and give them suggested on how to progress
forward.
